Pakistan avalanche shines light on 'futile' war

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? An avalanche that has buried more than 120 soldiers in a Himalayan region close to India has put a spotlight on what critics says is one of world's most pointless military deployments: two poverty-wracked nations engaged in a costly standoff over an uninhabitable patch of mountain and ice.

Since Saturday morning when the massive wall of snow engulfed a Pakistani military complex close to the Siachen Glacier, rescue teams have been unable to dig up any survivors. There is now very little hope that even a small number of people will come out alive.

A team of U.S. military experts was expected to arrive at the site Monday to assist in the rescue efforts, according to an American official. The team flew in from Afghanistan after the Pakistani army asked for help, the official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.

The U.S. military helped Pakistan after the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and floods in 2010, ventures that Washington used to bolster efforts to strengthen its ties with Islamabad, vital in the fight against al-Qaida. The current mission is far smaller, and comes amid a near-breakdown in relations between the two countries.

The missing soldiers form part of the Pakistani military deployment to the Siachen Glacier, which forms the northern part of Kashmir region, disputed between Islamabad and India and the main source of tension between the nuclear-armed rivals who have fought three wars since 1947.

The conflict over Siachen began in 1984 when India occupied the heights of the 78-kilometer (49-mile) long glacier, fearing Pakistan wanted to claim the territory. Islamabad also deployed its troops. A 2003 cease-fire largely ended skirmishes on the the glacier, where troops have been deployed as high as 6,000 metres (20,000 ft), but both armies remained camped out there.

Neither side releases information on troop numbers in the region, but they are beleived to be in the hundreds or low thousands.

Of all the problems plaguing the two countries, Siachen is often described as one of the easiest to solve but it is hostage to general mistrust and hard-liners on both sides, who don't want to give up their claim on territory, however strategically insignificant.

"This absolutely futile, useless fiasco has been going on since 1984," said Pakistan-India peace activist Tahira Abdullah. "It is a one-hour job to agree on a solution, but it is now an ego problem between the two armies. Both armies should pull back from the heights. Soldiers are dying and my heart bleeds for them, but it's for nothing."

Temperatures as low as -60 C (-76 F), vicious winds and altitude sickness ? the region is just east of the world's second-highest peak, K-2 ? a have killed far more than the artillery fire. Casualty figures are not released by either military, but hundreds are beleived to have died there.

The avalanche plowed into the headquarters at Gayari sector, which is at the entrance to the glacier, and buried the complex under more than 20 meters (70 feet) of snow.

The military says at least 124 soldiers from the 6th Northern Light Infantry Battalion and 11 civilian contractors had been buried. Publicly, the army held out hope of survivors.

"Miracles have been seen and trapped people were rescued after days ... so the nation shall pray for the trapped soldiers," army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas told a local television station late Sunday.

The frontier in Siachen has never been demarcated. When the Line of Control that divides Kashmir was set by the two countries after a 1971 war, it didn't extend to the northern glacier because it was considered uninhabitable.

On Sunday, President Asif Ali Zardari met with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in India, the first time the two leaders have met in three years. The issue of Siachen was raised in the 40 minute meeting, according to Indian Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai.

Analysts say resolving Siachen should be possible before the much more difficult dispute over Kashmir is attempted.

Because no one lives in the region and it is of no strategic value, a joint or even unilateral withdrawal from one side could break the logjam.

"Why should we be going for an agreement, we should just withdraw," said Imtiaz Alam, the head of the South Asian Free Media Association, which promotes regional peace. "If we do that, Indian domestic pressure will also result in a withdrawal there. They will say it is madness to continue."

Each country spends many millions of dollars to maintain troops in the remote region.

"We should do joint research in the area on how to stop the glacier melting," said Alam. "Make it a peace park instead of wasting money."

Heart Disease Information - What That You Never Knew Regarding ...

There?s a hilarious bit in the popular sitcom Friends where Chandler, one of the main characters, decides that he is going to quit his gym because he?s fed up of having $50 going out of this account every single month when he just does not use his membership. Of course, quitting fitness center isn?t easy, as he finds out.

It?s the dirty little secret of the fitness club industry. If they did not have a lot of members that they actually did not expect to never show up, they would not be profitable. Only one out of two new members who join for a New Year?s resolution in January actually stay on till April, for instance. The gyms depend on them. When a sports club member gets fed up of paying his dues for no discernible reason and actually tries to quit, they make it as difficult as is possible (or, as happened with Chandler in the sitcom, they send a fitness goddess in to to the sports club quitter processing).

Not only do gyms make lots of money on members who do not come, they make a lot on extra-spending also ? individual training, the healthy meals and juice bars and so on.

While they might call a fitness club a health club, you need to realize that these are not the healthiest places around. The key factor for this is that it?s a place where people come in with very few garments on, and they let their sweat contaminate just about any surface. What?s worse, the towels they give you at the fitness center are generally not washed correctly.

In other words, gyms happen to be hotbeds of infectious ailments. If you?re planning to use one, you?d better go there truly with full sleeved garments to wear at all times, your own towels to use their, a disinfectant spray bottle to spray surfaces clean before you get into communication with them, and so forth.

Your fitness club is not truly healthful if how they put stress causing equipment in the hands of overweight folks, and still refuse to do something about the likelihood that people have heart assaults. It does not require that much of a stretch of the inventiveness.

You put out-of-shape people in charge of heavy-duty exercise equipment, and they could overexert themselves. If fitness clubs and personnel who knew CPR road had defibrillators on and, it would be lots of sense. Every moment that treatment is delayed after a heart attack , your chances of survival top 10%.

Enhance Your Current Metabolism Rate To Shed Extra Pounds Quickly
Some of the factors that determine your metabolic rate are predominantly not in your control. For example, how tall you are, how old you are or whether you are a man or woman ? you could hardly be blamed for these.

Calorie Counting Can Be As Easy As Learning The Alphabet If You Approach It The Right Way
If you want to stay away from the calorie counting madness all around you, there?s just one place left that offers refuge ? and it?s called home. Unless you like to purchase anything that?s edible and packaged.

The Supreme Value Of Sticking To A Balanced Diet Plan
The very first thing that I was told is that a balanced diet is important when trying to lose weight and get in to better shape because it is important to stay healthy and maintain energy.

Exercise Clubs ? The Fitness Clubs Of Today Have Come Quite A Ways In A Short Time
Today?s fitness gym is a far cry from the older workout facilities from years ago. Never before have you had the ability to choose from so many different options in this particular realm. One consideration that you want to make is whether you want to visit a fitness gym.

Nutrition And Fitness Programs ? Which Are The Most Effective Diet And Workout Plans?
Any diet and exercise plans that sound too good to be true generally are, and you ought to think hard before you try them, specifically if they are on the expensive side.

Interesting Note: Today's Booming Cocktail Culture: SO WHAT ARE PEOPLE DRINKING?

?

'Generation X'? / 'Generation Y':? Not Your Father?s Cocktail

Some of the people polled strongly feel that drink choices are different along generation lines. While the 'Boomers' tend to stick to their regular drink of choice, they find 'Gen X and Gen Y' drinkers are highly open to experimenting and sipping something new. Perhaps the words of a seasoned cocktail veteran and general manager of Boston's new Island Creek Oyster Bar, Tom Schlesinger- Guidelli, sums it up best: ?Wine drinkers still drink wine. Tequila- and agave-based spirits as a whole have grown.? In particular, you see movement in the craft cocktail world through younger drinkers who find wine intimidating and cocktails as an easier avenue for exploration. At the end of the day, you still see people in a pretty classic, aperitif style cocktail before dinner, wine or beer with dinner and straight spirit after.?

MOVIES MOVING INTO MIZNER ~

Plans for an upscale iPic Theater with a bar and restaurant were presented at the city's Dec. 8 Planning & Zoning Board meeting. The owner hopes to have the new movie house open by May, after the long-vacant space at the south end of Mizner Park is totally redesigned. The former Sunrise Cinemas location closed last winter, and an eviction lawsuit was filed in March.

The new movie house will be reconfigured with only 40 to 60 seats in each of eight spaces. The luxury section has push-button recliners and allows food service 20 minutes into the feature. The lower-priced seats up front are leather, and movie goers can buy food there and bring it in while they watch. The box office will move inside, but patrons can also buy tickets and pick their seats in advance online.

iPic Entertainment president and CEO Hamid Hashemi presented the site plan as part of his request for 1,932 more square feet, approved unanimously. A new facade will alert patrons it's a cinema, instead of the blank wall there now, he pointed out.

The former Muvico founder and CEO formed iPic in 2007. The company now has eight locations in Arizona, California, Illinois, Washington, Wisconsin and Texas.

Looking for UNUSUAL &

AWESOME THINGS TO DO

IN MIAMI??

HERE ARE 3 I'LL BET YOU'VE NEVER DONE BEFORE! ?

Good for visitors coming into town when you're being thrust into the role of tour guide?

1. "You've heard of swimming with dolphins, now how about biking with gators?" Try two-wheeling the Everglades' Shark Valley for a "sporty, authentic and jaw-dropping" adventure. Just be warned: the gator's winsome smile might actually appear "right up on the trail!" Or get a bite of the action on Buffalo Tiger's Airboat Tour of Florida's wetlands. The fact that the alligators were "close enough to touch" makes this perfect for visiting out-of-town guests.? And with tickets starting at $20, it ain't going to cost you an arm and a leg!

2. go 'camera crazy' at Coral Castle -One visitor said:? "This astounding and mysterious coral marvel was built by a lovesick man" for his estranged fianc?e. What's bonkers is that he chiseled Miami's version of Stonehenge "by moonlight, without modern equipment!" The Venetian Pool is Coral Gables' claim to rock stardom. With waterfalls, cave-like grottos and its signature bridge, you'll feel removed from civilization! To experience nature's finest flora, visit the Fairchild Garden. Or to a lesser-known retreat that most people in Miami have no idea even exists: The Kampong is the former abode of famed horticulturalist David Fairchild and is "worth the visit for the serenity and exotic greenery."

3. Make Miami's enviable bay your next port of call and take a Thriller of a speed boat ride: One visitor said:? "The worth-every-penny moment came when we jumped the wake of another boat . I felt like we were in an action movie!" And if the only running you're doing is into Miami's arms, South Pointe Park is picturesque. One visitor said:? "Once you've had your fill of ogling the beautiful boats, swing over to Joe's Take Away for a few claws to polish off on the grass outside. It's a little slice of utopia!"?

Hellickson, Rays shut down Yankees 3-0 for sweep

(AP) ? Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon talked all spring about the importance of winning early, and the Rays have responded by matching the best start in franchise history with a season-opening sweep of the New York Yankees.

Jeremy Hellickson came within one out of a three-hitter on his birthday and the Rays beat the Yankees 3-0 Sunday to drop the defending AL East champions to 0-3 for the first time in 14 years.

The Rays, who overcame a nine-game deficit in September to earn the AL wild card last season, didn't take a lead until the ninth inning of their seventh game a year ago.

They took first-inning leads in all three games against the Yankees and swept the series with help from several players brought in this winter to bolster the offense and bullpen.

"It's looking good," said Carlos Pena, Tampa Bay's career home run leader who is back in a Rays uniform after spending 2011 with the Chicago Cubs.

Pena and another offseason acquisition, Jeff Keppinger, homered for Tampa Bay, which also started with three consecutive wins in 2002. The Yankees are 0-3 for the first time since 1998, when they went on to win 114 games and the World Series.

New York manager Joe Girardi isn't concerned.

"At times, it seems magnified when it's the beginning of the year," Girardi said. "We've all been through three-game losing streaks. This is a resilient club. We'll be fine."

Celebrating his 25th birthday, Hellickson (1-0) limited the Yankees to doubles by Nick Swisher, Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez. The 2011 AL Rookie of the Year walked four, struck out four and was one out from his third career complete game and second shutout when he was replaced by Fernando Rodney after 118 pitches.

The Yankees went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position against Hellickson and Rodney, an offseason addition to Tampa Bay's bullpen who got the win in Friday's season opener and then earned saves in each of the next two games. New York was 5 for 25 with runners in scoring position for the series.

"That was a good birthday present," Hellickson said. "It's always nice to get off to a good start against these guys in our division. We came out and played hard and got three good wins."

Pena homered off starter Phil Hughes (0-1) in the third. Keppinger hit a solo shot off Boone Logan in the sixth, while Matt Joyce drove in Tampa Bay's other run with a first-inning, broken-bat triple that skipped past sliding right fielder Raul Ibanez.

Hellickson gave up a one-out double in the second to Swisher but escaped further damage when Ibanez grounded out and Brett Gardner popped up to left field. The right-hander worked through another tight spot in the fourth after walking Rodriguez and giving up a double to Teixeira, this time getting Swisher to pop up to third base and Ibanez to fly to center field.

Rodriguez doubled with two outs in the sixth. After walking Teixeira, Hellickson struck Swisher to escape the jam and then didn't allow another runner until walking Swisher with two outs in the ninth.

"That was very impressive," Pena said of Hellickson's performance. "He was just so calm the whole time. That's something that should never be overlooked. He's just a kid out there, and just handled the spotlight, the pressure, whatever you want to call it, in such a way that is just amazing."

Rodney retired Ibanez on an easy comebacker to end it.

"Everything they did worked out perfectly," Rodriguez said. "Everything we did worked out imperfectly."

Pena hit a grand slam off CC Sabathia and a game-winning single off Mariano Rivera in the opener. The slugger had another RBI single in Saturday's 8-6 victory and finished the series 6 for 12 with two homers and seven RBIs.

Hughes allowed two runs and five hits, walked two and struck out five over 4 2-3 innings. Logan and three other relievers kept the Yankees in the game by holding the Rays to two hits the rest of the way.

While no one is about to panic, Rodriguez said the Yankees will carry a sense of urgency into a series that begins Monday night in Baltimore.

"You just want to win a game. Want to get this thing to 1-3 and get the train headed in the right direction," he said.

"Guys are playing hard. Offensively, we're hitting balls. Probably a dozen balls right on the nose that were caught," Rodriguez added. "We're hitting it right into the teeth of their secondary. Sometimes you just have to tip your cap and move on."

NOTES: Rays DH Luke Scott left the game with a tight left hamstring and is day to day. ... Girardi said A-Rod will be the designated hitter Monday night at Baltimore, and that he might DH twice during the three-game series. ... LHP Andy Pettitte will pitch for Class-A Tampa on Monday in his second outing following a one-year retirement. ... Tampa Bay CF B.J. Upton, on the 15-day disabled list with lower back soreness, will begin a rehab assignment with Class-A Charlotte on Monday. The Rays hope to get him at least 30 at-bats before activating him. ... New York RHP Michael Pineda, out until at least May due to right shoulder tendinitis, threw at 60 feet on flat ground. ... Swisher, slowed by a pair of groin injuries during spring training, was the DH after playing defense the previous two days on the Tropicana Field artificial turf.

30-year mortgage rate under 4 percent

30-year mortgage rates fall slightly to an average 3.98 percent, near record low of 3.87 percent that 30-year mortgages hit in February.

The average U.S.?rate?on the 30-year fixed?mortgage?was mostly unchanged this week, as the cost of home-buying and refinancing stayed near record lows.

Mortgage?buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday that the?rate?on the 30-year loan fell slightly to 3.98 percent from 3.99 percent last week. In February, the?rate?touched 3.87 percent, the lowest since long-term?mortgagesbegan in the 1950s.

The average?rate?on the 15-year fixed?mortgage?also fell, to 3.21 percent from 3.23 percent. That's above the record low of 3.13 percent hit last month.

Mortgage?rates?have been below 4 percent for all but one week since early December. That's helped lift the outlook for housing after four sluggish years of home sales. Still, most economists expect only modest gains.

January and February made up the best winter for re-sales in five years, when the housing crisis began. And builders are more confident about the market. In February, they requested the most permits to build single-family homes and apartments in more than three years.

Applications for new?mortgages?rose in March, according to the?Mortgage?Bankers Association, and there was a sharp rise in the average loan size, suggesting a bigger appetite for home loans. The average size ofmortgage?applications has increased by $20,000 since December, to about $235,000 last month.

An improved job market is driving the modest increase in home sales. Employers have added an average 245,000 net jobs per month from December through February. The unemployment?rate?has dropped from 9.1 percent in August to 8.3 percent in February, the lowest level in nearly three years.

Frank Nothaft, Freddie Mac's chief economist, said?rates?were little changed this week amid mixed signals on the health of the U.S. economy.

He pointed to minutes from the Federal Reserve's mid-March meeting, which showed officials were less inclined to take further action to stimulate the economy. The Fed noted that the job market has strengthened, although it cautioned that the housing market remains depressed.

Home prices continue to fall. Prices tend to lag sales and millions of foreclosures and short sales ? when a lender accepts less than what is owed on a?mortgage?? remain on the market. And the housing crisis and recession have also persuaded many Americans to rent instead of buy, which has led to a drop in homeownership.

Mortgage?rates?tend to track the yield on the 10-year Treasury note. An improved economic outlook has led investors to shift money from U.S. Treasury bonds to stocks. That pushes up Treasury yields, which move in the opposite direction of the price.

To calculate the average?rates, Freddie Mac surveys lenders across the country on just Monday through Wednesday of each week.

The average?rates?don't include extra fees, known as points, which most borrowers must pay to get the lowestrates. One point equals 1 percent of the loan amount.

The average fee for the 30-year fixed loan was 0.7. For the 15-year fixed loan, the average fell to 0.7 from 0.8.

For the five-year adjustable loan, the average?rate?fell to 2.86 percent from 2.90 percent, and the average fee was unchanged at 0.8.

The average on the one-year adjustable loan was unchanged at 2.78 percent, and the average fee was unchanged at 0.6.

Pope at Easter vigil: 'Truth is stronger than lies'

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI, carrying a tall, lit candle, ushered in Christianity's most joyous celebration with an Easter vigil service Saturday night, but voiced fears that mankind is groping in darkness, unable to distinguish good from evil.

Easter for Christians commemorates Christ's triumph over death with his resurrection following his crucifixion.

"Life is stronger than death. Good is stronger than evil. Love is stronger than hate. Truth is stronger than lies," Benedict, wearing white robes in a symbol of new life, told the faithful in a packed St. Peter's Basilica.

Still, Benedict worried in his homily: "The darkness that poses a real threat to mankind, after all, is the fact that he can see and investigate tangible material things, but cannot see where the world is going or whence it comes, where our own life is going, what is good and what is evil."

"The darkness enshrouding God and obscuring values is the real threat to our existence and to the world in general," the pope said.

"If God and moral values, the difference between good and evil, remain in darkness, then all other 'lights,' that put such incredible technical feats within our reach, are not only progress but also dangers that put us and the world at risk," Benedict added.

The service began dramatically. Except for the twinkle of camera flashes, the basilica was almost pitch-black as the thousands of faithful in pews awaited Benedict's arrival through the rear entrance. After aides lit the candle, Benedict climbed aboard a raised platform that was wheeled up the long main aisle to the central altar. The wheeled device is used to save wear and tear on the pontiff, who turns 85 on April 16.

Benedict, who has made protection of the environment a theme of his papacy, made a reference to urban pollution in his homily. "Today we can illuminate our cities so brightly that the stars in the sky are no longer visible," he said. "Is this not an image of the problems caused by our version of enlightenment?"

"With regard to material things, our knowledge and our technical accomplishments are legion, but what reaches beyond, the things of God and the question of good, we can no longer identify," Benedict added, saying that faith was the "true enlightenment."

During the vigil ceremony, Benedict welcomed eight adult converts to the church, pouring water over their bowed heads in baptism.

On Sunday morning, Benedict will lead Easter Mass in St. Peter's Square, then deliver a speech from the central balcony of the basilica, at the end of stamina-testing Holy Week appearances.

The Hunger Games Sequel: Delayed by Director?

Lionsgate has already booked a November 2013 release date for the wildly-anticipated sequel to The Hunger Games, Catching Fire. But might the studio have trouble meeting this deadline?

Katniss Everdeen Hunting

The question arises because negotiations aren't going smoothly with director Gary Ross, who executives want to return based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews for the first installment of the franchise.

Ross earned $3 million for The Hunger Games - plus back-end profits - and, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter, is angling for a major sequel raise.

All other major players have signed on for both Catching Fire and Mockingjay - from Jennifer Lawrence to Liam Hemsworth - so the only real hold-up at the moment is Ross. The film could always take on a new director, of course, but an insider sees that as unlikely.

"Ultimately, it will be difficult, and yet everybody will do the sane thing, which is to work it out. Everybody will end up unhappy in their own way. It's just the nature of the beast."
