April Fools: Google's self-driving cars head for Nascar race tracks

As part of its annual April Fools' pranks, Google came up with Google Racing, an almost plausible partnership with Nascar. In a post on the official Google blog, apparent racing car fan Sergey Brin wrote:

...today we're moving the project one great leap forward with Google Racing, a groundbreaking partnership with NASCAR to help self-driving vehicles compete in the world of stock car racing. We think the most important thing computers can do in the next decade is to drive cars--and that the most important thing Google Racing can do in the next decade is drive them, if possible, more quickly than anyone else. Or anything else.?

Brin, or someone at Google, writes about the joys of enabling??"one of our cars to hold its own in a field of 43 jacked-up, 800-horsepower beasts screaming down a straightaway within inches of each other at upwards of 200 miles per hour," and concludes, "I can't imagine a more exciting challenge for our team than to race our autonomous vehicles against their carbon-based competitors."

The prank includes an?elaborate video with Nascar, paint schemes for the Nascar stock car and several photos, with an "I'm steering lucky!" decal on the back fender.?

While it's in the classic style of Google April Fools' pranks -- which this year includes a?Google Maps 8-bit?for the Nintendo Entertainment System and?sending Gmail by Morse code?-- it is inevitable that Google's self-driving cars go up against real drivers on a race track, just as IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer took on chess master Garry Kasparov in 1997. And guess who won that match of chess skills?

Are You Over Analyzing Your Small Business? | Small Business ...

There is an interesting post on Small Business Newz that discusses the much vaunted ?Big Data Train.? The article makes sense up to a point, however, there are times when I wonder if small businesses are over analyzing their online presence. Being online does open up the prospect of measuring everything that happens. Whether it?s email views and responses, visitor activity on your site, or how readers respond to social media activity ? there is a way of collecting data and measuring that data against a range of standards. Bit is it too much?

Small businesses have succeeded for centuries on very basic data ? if they bothered to measure it at all. There is a real danger now that business owners are becoming slaves to this data, spending more time collating and analyzing than they do in actually running their business ? then complain that their business is going down hill. Sometimes, the key is analyzing your analytics ? do you really need all that data?

To succeed online, you need to know where to draw the line. You need to be able to filter out non essential data and to concentrate on the data that is really important. For many online small businesses, this is easy. Search rankings, traffic flow, and visitor activity. If you rank number one, receive 500 visitors each day with a 5% conversion? ? that is easy to analyze, and as you make improvements to your business activities, you can easily measure their effects. For most small businesses, the big data train and cloud computing all sound good ? but are they actually good for your business?? You know your business, don?t become snowed under by too much useless data.

GOP congressman asks Democrats if they?re ready to embrace ?Obamacare?

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) said last July, ?I take great offense when I hear the word ?Obamacare.? There is no such thing.? His colleague, Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-MO), called the word ?purposefully provocative,? ?misleading? and ?unfair.?

But now that even President Obama is embracing the word, will other Democrats change their tune?

House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) wants some clarity on the issue. Roll Call?s Jonathan Strong reports that Issa wrote to Cummings and Clay to figure out where they stand today.

?Given your past rhetoric, please clarify whether you would like the record to reflect that you still stand behind your earlier statements and believe the Obama campaign?s use of the term ?Obamacare? is inappropriate or indicate that you would like the record to reflect the fact that you have changed your position on the use of the term?Obamacare? and do not intend to object to its usage in future committee proceedings,? Issa wrote.

Liberals initially recoiled at the term and many news outlets avoided using it. But the law?s official title, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act or PPACA, didn?t exactly stick. A blogger at Daily Kos raised the issue in January: ?What do we want to call the PPACA?? Among the ideas floated were ?ObamaCare? with a capital ?C? and ?ObamaCARES!?

Two years after the law?s passage, Jim Messina, the president?s campaign manager, sent an email encouraging supporters to use the word: ?If you?re tired of the other side throwing around that word like it?s an insult, then join me in sending a message that we?re proud of it.? Obama adviser David Axelrod took it a step farther, sending an email with the subject line, ?Hell yeah ? I like Obamacare.?

Roll Call was unable to get a comment from Cummings and Clay. The newspaper did note that regardless of what Democrats decide, members of Congress still won?t be able to use the term in official mailings to constituents.

?Associating personal identity with legislation is prohibited by the Franking Commission. The use of ?Obamacare? falls within that category,? spokesman Steve Dutton said.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) said he was recently informed he had used the word Obamacare on the House floor four times more than the person who used it the second most.

Asked about the Franking Commission?s policy, King said, ?The president can use his middle name but nobody else can, by order of the Franking Commission. And he can use ?Obamacare? but nobody else can, by order of the Franking Commission. Double standard!?
